Childbirth Classes at Medical City Dallas
The Parent Education Department would like to congratulate you on your decision to deliver at Medical City Dallas Women's Hospital! We are confident you will have a great experience and enjoy your time spent at our facility.
We want to support you in your decision to become prepared and educated for you childbirth experience. Through our parent education classes, you will gain important knowledge and confidence on what to expect during this major event in your lives. We base our care at Medical City Dallas on the entire family. That is why we also offer classes for dads, sibling and grandparents. We look forward to having you all join us and our nurse educators as we prepare you and your loved ones for this special event in your lives.
Maternity hospital tours
Our tours are offered on two Saturday's a month. They will begin in the Medical City Women's Hospital Dallas lobby in Building D. Registration is required through our Classes & Events page. There is no charge for this, but due to our large number of attendees we can only accommodate the expectant parents. When registering please only register mom, and that will secure two spots for you during that tour. For the safety of our patients, attendees will not be allowed to tour our maternity areas unless you are accompanied by our parent education staff.

The pregnancy journey
From the first positive signs to letting all your friends and family know the good news, we're here to help you start your pregnancy journey.
This two-hour class will talk about all those early questions you may have. Is it okay for me to drink coffee and soda? Why is it called morning sickness and when will it end? Is it safe to have sex now that I'm pregnant? What is that twinge in my abdomen? How do my emotions affect my baby? We will also cover nutrition and fitness as well as warning signs and precautions.
*This class is recommended for parents in their first trimester and parents-to-be.
Prepared childbirth class
This class was designed to help first time parents navigate their hospital birth experience. Topics of discussion will include:
- Signs and symptoms of labor
- Phases and stages of labor
- Comfort measure choices for labor, including breathing patterns, positioning, massage, focus and distraction, pain medication choices, nitrous oxide, labor tubs and epidural blocks
- Medically necessary reasons for induction
- Cesarean Births
- Vaginal Birth after a Cesarean Birth (VBAC)
- Immediate newborn appearance and care after delivery
- What to pack for labor, delivery and postpartum
- Postpartum care for mom
- Tour of our labor and delivery and postpartum units
*This class can be taken in a single day format or a 4 week series.

Elearning prepared childbirth class
We recognize that life is busy. Balancing work schedules, home life and parent education classes can be difficult. We are pleased to offer an alternative to our traditional classroom education offerings. Through eLearning you can pace yourself and learn when it is convenient to your schedule. Whether it's at home in a comfortable chair on a Sunday afternoon or in the middle of the night when you can't sleep, our eLearning classroom is always open! You must register for this class and will be provided with a code to access the interactive website. The online class does not include a tour, please register for one of our Saturday tours.
*This class is a good choice for busy first-time parents but is an excellent refresher class for experienced parents too!
Congratulations! You have made the decision to breastfeed your new baby. Breastfeeding offers many benefits to babies and mothers. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastmilk for the first six months of your baby's life. Medical City Dallas Women's Hospital is committed to providing you with the help and information needed to get off to a great start!
Included in this class will be topics such as infant feeding cues, proper latch and position, how long and how often to feed, signs that baby is getting enough and breastfeeding for working mothers.
*Since family support is so important we strongly encourage dad, grandmother or another support person to attend as well.
Baby care basics
No instruction manual will pop out when your baby arrives! This class is designed to prepare you to care for your newborn. Included in this class will be first day of life expectations, newborn appearances and behaviors, comforting techniques, diapering, bathing, skin care, healthy sleep, circumcision, feeding options, how to pick and when to call a pediatrician, supplies you will need and common newborn procedures.
*This class is beneficial for all first-time parents.
Infant CPR and childhood safety
What would you do if your infant stopped breathing or is choking? Come learn the lifesaving skills that will help you in this emergency. You will be provided with a kit that you can bring home and share with family, friends and babysitters as well. This class will also focus on establishing a safe home for your new addition and will cover topics such as basic first aid, accident prevention, basic car seat safety, childproofing your home, SIDS prevention, and shaken baby syndrome. The class is best taken between 32-38 weeks, but it can also be completed after the birth of your baby.
*This is not a CPR certification. Please contact the American Heart Association for more information on certification, if desired.
Baby bump yoga
Medical City Dallas Women's Hospital offers prenatal yoga, set in a calm and peaceful environment. We will focus on breath, the body and your baby. Relaxation and breathing exercises will allow you to connect with your body's innate wisdom. Gentle stretching poses prepare you for labor while strengthening poses provide necessary stamina. Yoga may help alleviate many of the discomforts of pregnancy by improving circulation, strengthening pelvic muscles and increasing overall comfort. A safe and open atmosphere encourages discussion of any concerns, as well as the exciting changes of pregnancy. Prenatal yoga is an opportunity to relax your mind, strengthen your body and prepare for childbirth. Each class will be led by a certified professional yoga instructor. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. in the Medical City Children's Hospital Classrooms A & B. All participants must have completed the prenatal yoga form (request it by using the form at the bottom of this page) signed by your OB/GYN physician. Little bit yoga
Little Bit Yoga is a great opportunity for new moms to bond with their babies and other mothers. The class teaches basic yoga poses that focus on strength and relaxation. Babies are included as participants and observers. You'll love to see them socialize! Please join us for an entertaining and often unpredictable yoga experience. Laughing and crying is expected. It's never too early for baby's first Namaste! Little Bit Yoga meets every Thursday morning from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. To register for this class, please call (972) 566-7111.

Sibling celebration and tour
The birthing process is a family event! When children are included in the preparation for childbirth with their own class, they see the coming baby as a celebration. This class will include a special tour for siblings, how to be a good sibling and how to help mom and dad with the baby. The format includes a short video and several hands-on activities with parents.
*This class is geared toward children from 3-8 years old.
Tool time for new dads
This class will give dads the tools they need to navigate their new role of being a father. This class is taught by an expert mechanic of fatherhood! This class will cover topics such as checking under the hood, what is leaking and how long since these pads have been changed. Sorry moms, only dads are allowed to attend this class!
How to be a grand-parent
This two hour class helps grandparents-to-be and new grandparents tap into the wisdom they have acquired through experience while learning ways to help and support the new parents in their lives. Learn about what is new and evidenced-based in the world of infant safety and parenting.
