Fetal Intervention and Fetal Surgery
Of the approximately 4 million babies born in the United States each year, about 120,000 (3 percent) have a complex birth defect that can be treated or addressed through fetal intervention or fetal surgery. Maternal fetal specialists have long known that some birth defects could be successfully treated after birth. But as technology, fetal imaging and prenatal testing have improved over the past few decades, so too has our knowledge of fetal development and the benefits of performing surgery while the baby is still in utero.
The Fetal Intervention and Surgery program at Medical City Dallas provides leading-edge treatment for the most vulnerable patients suffering from congenital birth defects.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Medical City's Level IV neonatal intensive care unit is staffed 24 hours a day by board certified neonatologists, nurse practitioners and nurses with specialized NICU training. They're all prepared to care for medically fragile infants, including those who require cardiac surgery, neurosurgery or general surgery.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Our Level 1 PICU is capable of treating the most severely ill pediatric patients. With pediatric Intensivists in-house 24/7, services such as high-frequency oscillating ventilation or Extra-Corporeal Membranous Oxygenation (ECMO) are available at all times. Advanced telemedicine technology allows our intensivists to communicate with physicians, patients, and families at referring facilities with real-time video assessments.
As the largest center of its kind in the world, our Craniofacial Center offers comprehensive multidisciplinary services, bringing together all the specialists needed to help children with even the most complex anomalies. The center has treated thousands of patients from all 50 states and more than 75 countries, performing more than 15,000 surgical procedures aimed at helping children better face the world.
