Women's Cancer Surgeons
Gynecologic oncologists are surgeons who specialize in the treatment and surgical removal of gynecologic cancers. These cancers include ovarian, endometrial, peritoneal, vaginal and vulvar cancers. Gynecologic oncologists work with each woman's medical team to ensure she is being offered the best chance at restored health, with therapy options including radiation and chemotherapy. Medical City Dallas has three gynecologic oncologists who meet the criteria required for Medical City's physician referral program.
“It's not their fight. It's our fight.”
Dr. Bruce Fine has more than 20 years of experience diagnosing and treating gynecologic cancers. Three of Dr. Fine's patients have been featured by the Next Chapter project.
Dr. Thomas Heffernan was designated an epicenter surgeon by Intuitive Surgical Systems. There are only four gynecologic oncologist epicenter surgeons in the United States. Epicenter surgeons are responsible for training other robotic surgeons and are chosen in part for their excellence in patient outcomes.
Intuitive, the company that determines epicenter designations, produces the only FDA approved surgical robotic system in the United States. Robotic technology allows surgeons to move surgical tools through robotic controls, which results in precision not always possible with the human hand alone. Robotic surgeries often result in less pain and lower infection rates.
Dr. Heffernan's patient stories have been highlighted by the Next Chapter, as well as CBS 11.
Dr. Alan K. Munoz has been practicing gynecologic oncology in the Dallas area for over twenty years.
Though his primary medical interest is gynecologic oncology (cancer in the female reproductive organs), he is also a specialist in difficult, complex, female pelvic surgeries. He is board certified in obstetrics-gynecology and gynecologic oncology and is a member of numerous medical, gynecologic organizations.
Dr. Munoz and his patients have been featured by the Next Chapter at Medical City Dallas.
