Parent Education Classes
Congratulations on your decision to deliver at Medical City Dallas Hospital! We are confident you will have a great experience and enjoy your time spent at Medical City.
We want to support you in your decision to become prepared and educated for your childbirth experience. Through education you will gain important knowledge about what to expect and how to prepare for your big day. Our parent education classes are offered to not only the expectant parents but also to grandparents and siblings as well. This is an exciting time for you AND your entire family. We look forward to having you join us and our specialized nurse educators as we help prepare you and your loved ones for your upcoming delivery.

Maternity Tours are offered once a month on Saturday afternoon starting in 2015. We will meet in the atrium of Medical City Children’s Hospital near the big tree. Tour will promptly begin at 12:30pm. For the safety of our patients, you will not be allowed to tour our Maternity areas unless you are accompanied by our Registered Nurse. Due to the large number of attendees, we can only accommodate the expectant parents...no children or other family members please. Tours are provided in the Preparation for Childbirth class, Cesarean Section Class and Sibling Class; therefore if you are already registered to take these classes, you will not need to sign up for an additional tour. Sweet Beginnings is a FREE class for new moms and babies. Baby Bump Yoga and Little Bit Yoga are $5 per class. The fee for all other classes is a flat rate of $100 per couple. This payment covers as many classes as you would like to attend, with the exception of Baby Bump Yoga.
Little Bit Yoga (Mondays starting January 6, 2014): Little Bit Yoga is a great opportunity for new moms to bond with their babies and other mothers. The class teaches basic yoga poses that focus on strength and relaxation. Babies are included as participants and observers. You’ll love to see them socialize! Please join us for an always entertaining and often unpredictable yoga experience. Laughing and crying is expected. It’s never too early for baby’s first Namaste!
Sweet Beginnings: A fun class for new moms and their babies in their first year of life together. Learn about the latest trends from infant massage, making your own baby food to infant sign, postnatal yoga and much more! For more information click here.
Preparation for Childbirth: A class for first-time parents that covers all aspects of childbirth, including labor signs, information on delivery, pain management, and caring for your newborn and yourself after delivery. The class will briefly discuss breathing and relaxation techniques, but is not intended for those looking for Lamaze classes. We recommend you also take a Lamaze class if choosing non-medicated childbirth. We suggest you also register for a breastfeeding class.
Weekday childbirth classes are a series of three classes over three weeks. We offer classes as a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. We will discuss labor and delivery, cesarean sections, postpartum care, newborn safety and baby care. Participants will receive an American Heart Association Infant CPR Anytime Kit. Weekend classes cover the same content taught in our weekday classes over the course of the one day.
Cesarean Section Class: This course includes a hospital tour, American Heart Association Infant Anytime CPR Kit, and tips for what to expect when you are planning on a cesarean birth as well as newborn care and postpartum cesarean recovery. We suggest that you also register for a breastfeeding class.
eLearning Parent Education: We recognize that life is busy. Balancing work schedules, home life and parent education classes can be difficult. We are pleased to offer an alternative to our traditional classroom education offerings. eLearning can be taken as a refresher class for the experienced parent or as a preparation class for first time parents. Through eLearning, you can pace yourself and learn when it is convenient to your schedule. Whether it’s at home in a comfortable chair on a Sunday afternoon or in the middle of the night when you can’t sleep, our eLearning classroom is always open! Lamaze Class: This class is to be taken in addition to the Preparation for Childbirth class if you are interested in the instruction and practice of breathing and relaxation techniques for labor. In Lamaze classes you will learn to understand and trust normal, natural, physiologic birth and increase your confidence and ability to give birth naturally.
Refresher Childbirth: At Medical City, we know you are busy and we want to make parent education fit into your schedules. We are pleased to offer our refresher class as part of our eLearning program and eLearning forums. Breastfeeding Class: The number one concern for a new mother is breastfeeding, and rightfully so. Breastfeeding offers many benefits to babies and mothers and we encourage you to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of your baby's life. Because we understand how important getting off to a good start is, Medical City is committed to providing you with the help you need to make breastfeeding a positive experience. This class includes the benefits, techniques, and troubleshooting problems.
Pumping for Your NICU Baby: The benefits of breast milk are vast and even more important for your NICU baby. We want to help you be successful with feeding your baby your pumped breast milk. Our breast pumping class with provide you with knowledge and skills on establishing a pump schedule, assembling and cleaning the breast pump, milk storage and feeding pumped breast milk.
Due to the sensitive and delicate nature of our patients, a tour will not be included and children are not permitted to join you in class.
Breastfeeding and the Working Mother: Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to breastfeed, now learn how you can return to work and maintain your milk supply while you continue to provide the best nutrition for your new baby. We will discuss breast pumping, milk storage, introducing breast milk bottles and much more.
Baby Bump Yoga: Medical City Women’s prenatal yoga, set in a calm and peaceful environment, will focus on the breath, the body, and your baby. Relaxation and breathing exercises will allow you to connect with your body's innate wisdom. Gentle stretching poses prepare you for labor while strengthening poses provide necessary stamina. Yoga may help alleviate many of the discomforts of pregnancy by improving circulation, strengthening pelvic muscles and increasing overall comfort. A safe and open atmosphere encourages discussion of any concerns, as well the exciting changes of pregnancy. Prenatal yoga is an opportunity to relax your mind, strengthen your body and prepare for childbirth. Each class will be led by a certified professional yoga instructor. Sibling Class I: This course includes topics like how to be a good brother or sister, newborn needs and sharing. Join us as we learn age appropriate concepts and some seriously silly presentations to help younger children prepare for their new sibling. This class is suitable for ages 3-6.
Sibling Class II: Ahoy! What do a pirate, a parrot and a baby have in common? They are all part of our sibling II class. Join us as we prepare your lassie or buccaneer for their new sibling! This course is for the older sibling, suitable for ages 6 and up.
Daddy 411: A class in which veteran fathers orient "rookie" dads in all aspects of becoming a father. If you're interesting in learning more, visit Dads Adventure to download a free magazine that describes some of the material covered in the course.
Grandparent Class: Find out how wonderful grandparenting can be, as well as tips to help you prepare for your new grandchild. We’ll discuss age appropriate play, developmental milestones, home, car and sleep safety and much more!
American Heart Association Infant CPR Anytime Kit: A personal learning program that you can take home and share with grandparents, family members, nannies and anyone who will be caring for your child.
