Medical City Heart

When it comes to the heart, we don’t miss a beat.

Every heartbeat is precious. The heart is essential to life. And thanks to our world-class facility, many patients are living longer, happier and healthier lives.

At Medical City Heart, physicians are at the forefront of cardiovascular technology, pushing the envelope with research and innovations in robot-assisted microsurgery, beating-heart surgery and minimally invasive heart surgery. The Heart Transplant Program has been recognized nationally and continues to be one of the most active transplant programs in the region. And no other area hospital features a more comprehensive cardiac cath lab treatment center. All administrative and clinical procedures are performed in one location, making the procedure easier on the patient and more efficient for the physician.

Cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists at Medical City have become the first in the United States to successfully perform a heart valve replacement surgery without opening the patient's chest. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved the request to treat the patient outside the clinical protocol, noted as "compassionate use." Unlike conventional valve-replacement surgery, this procedure was performed on a beating heart, without the need for a heart-lung machine, by delivering an aortic stent valve through a catheter for patients having critical aortic stenosis. Because of our experience in valvular heart disease, Medical City was selected by the FDA as an investigative site in an international trial evaluating the transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure.

Nationally recognized for design and operation, our Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is a dedicated area where individuals who arrive at our Emergency Room with heart attack symptoms can be monitored by a specially trained cardiovascular staff. Medical City's CDU has been emulated by other hospitals across the country.

The ER at Medical City was also the first facility in Dallas to receive national accreditation from The Society of Chest Pain Centers for excellence in addressing, diagnosing and treating patients with chest pain. So if you think you're having a heart attack or are experiencing heart attack symptoms, there's no place you'd rather be than Medical City.

At Medical City Heart we have the capability, knowledge and experience to handle every aspect of heart care – from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care.

Prevention and Diagnosis
We work hard to provide our community with a variety of lifestyle enhancement programs that help you take an active role in managing your heart health. From risk assessment profiles to state-of-the art diagnostics like a Cardio Scan and our Emergency Department’s Clinical Decision Unit, Medical City is committed to providing our patients with cardiovascular care that is unsurpassed in North Texas.

Cardio Scan. In only a matter of minutes, a Cardio Scan at Medical City Imaging identifies symptomatic and asymptomatic people at risk of heart disease by providing a score that quantifies the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. You don’t even need a referral from a physician. For more information, call 972-566-SCAN.

Chest Pain. When it comes to heart attack symptoms, not all emergency rooms are alike. That’s why Medical City Heart created our Clinical Decision Unit (CDU), a dedicated area within the Medical City Emergency Room where individuals with heart attack symptoms can be properly monitored to expedite their diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment and Follow-Up Care
When it’s time for treatment, our board-certified physicians specialize in both non-invasive and invasive procedures. In addition to their expertise, our doctors utilize the latest technology including the Medtronic Octopus 2 for beating-heart surgery. Medical City Heart completes 60% of open-heart surgeries using the off-pump process. Because the off-pump process allows the heart to beat during surgery, patients experience fewer side effects and recover more quickly.

The Heart Transplant Center at Medical City has evolved into a leading regional center for heart transplantation. Today, we are among the largest, most active transplant facilities in North Texas and the Southwest, having garnered national and international recognition. Many of our world-class physicians have over 20 years of transplant experience.

Medical City has a Congenital Heart Program with a dedicated core team of cardiovascular specialists who treat adult and pediatric congenital heart disease. This dedicated team of specialists has a full array of innovative diagnostic techniques, including cardiovascular MRI and 3-D fetal echocardiography to help them determine the best treatment options.

Following all heart procedures, patients receive the best care possible. By having separate, dedicated units, our specialist teams can provide more focused, efficient care.

In the Health & Fitness Center inside Medical City Heart, on-site personal trainers and nutritionists help patients learn how to live healthier when they get home.

And because heart trouble can be just as traumatic for family members, psychological counseling, social services and ongoing educational classes are available to help them recover as quickly as their loved ones.

When you get to the heart of it, there’s no place like Medical City Heart in North Texas.
