Purpose and Objectives
The purpose of the Internet Point of Care Series is to provide structured, self-directed, online learning for physicians on topics relevant to their clinical practice. The specific objectives are to:

  1. Identify practice-based knowledge needs
  2. Complete extensive background research on a clinical question
  3. Reinforce clinical decisions through review of published evidence
  4. Learn new information related to clinical practice
  5. Translate knowledge into professional practice
  6. Improve patient care by utilizing current published evidence.

Desired Results
The physician should be able to select and use appropriate professional, unbiased, peer-reviewed literature to answer self-identified clinical questions, to reinforce clinical decisions, to learn new information related to his clinical practice and to translate that knowledge into improved patient care.

Needs Assessment
The clinical questions will be self-identified knowledge needs. They may be based on:

  • A rare condition
  • A condition not managed recently by the physician
  • A diagnostic dilemma
  • New clinical information
  • Controversial clinical issues
  • Ethical issues

Target Audience
The target audience for this activity will be all Medical City affiliated physicians with Internet access.

Teaching Methods
The teaching method will consist of self-directed learning of a self-identified clinical question through use of evidence-based medical databases that are accessible through the hospital medical library website. The physician will identify and consult relevant sources and describe the application of his findings to practice.

Hardware/Software Requirements:
Internet access capability through any PC (including MAC)

Databases to be Utilized
The following databases will be used: UpToDate, MD Consult , PubMed/MEDLINE, Medscape, EMedicine Specialties, and Ebscomed.

Standards of Commercial Support and Disclosure
Databases have been chosen to ensure independence, lack of commercial bias and valid content. Commercial and/or educational grants will not be solicited for this activity.

Evaluation
The one-page verification form to be submitted with the reference list will include a brief evaluation of the activity effectiveness and its usefulness to the physician’s clinical practice.

Accreditation
Medical City Dallas Hospital is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation
Medical City Dallas Hospital designates this educational activity for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
